BASS CAT BOATS!!

Of all the Bass boats I've owned my Bass Cat Cougar is my favorite. On Okeechobee yesterday my co-angler and I were so happy we were in a Cat. The water was rough but she gave us a comfortable, safe, fast ride through all those waves! Check out the Aqua Tech Marine in Palm Bay FL to see the beautiful Bass Cats they have to offer. aquatechmarine.com  305-409-5712 Tell Robert I sent you.
I have a brand new Bass Cat Caracal ordered and I can't wait to get it!! I keep looking at the Caracal Videos online. What a freaking beautiful boat!

BFL April 18, 2015

This Monster 9 3/4 lb. Okeechobee Bass was caught during my practice for the April 18, 2015 Gator division BFL. Practice for this tournament was incredible! Everywhere I went there were fish. My tournament finish on the other hand was not so good. I made a mistake on focusing on Big fish instead of going through numbers of fish and culling up. I assumed because I was catching so many numbers of fish that if I focused solely on the big fish techniques I would do well. WRONG!!! I caught over 200 fish in my 5 days of practice and should have stayed with in the same numbers areas and caught as many as possible. Wish I could go back and do it again.

Good Times at Lake Okeechobee!

                                                                                          Feb 14, 2014

Lake Okeechobee has been nice to me lately. I finished 11th out of over 230 anglers in the FLW Rayovac tournament and 26th out of more than 170 anglers in the BFL tournament and not to forget the 3rd in the FLW Office Depot Charity Tournament. Bass fishing never gets old to me. Their is alway something new to discover. We have had many big fish on the lake lately and here are a couple of photos to brag about.

WHAT, 101 BASS, NO WAY!!

It's true, last Friday I took a great bunch of guys out to Lake Okeechobee, Ken, Andrew, Jarret, and Kevi
n, and they put a hurting on some fish! We had doubles, triples and maybe even one quadruple. It was like taking candy from a baby for most of the day! After boating 90 or so, it got a little slower, but the goal was 100 and Ken's wife was calling at that point with dinner waiting so the pressure was on, but they pulled it off and even caught one extra bass just to make sure. LOL!! WHAT A DAY!

FISHING WITH JOE SILL SR. AND JR.

Fellow Tennesseans, Joe Sill Sr. and Jr. came down to fish Okeechobee with me! Joe Sr. and his son are both outdoor writers. Joe Sr. is the Director of Marketing for Bill Dance. Needless to say I was a little nervous about putting them on fish. How could I come close to showing them fishing like my childhood idle, Bill Dance? Luckily, the fish were very cooperative! What a great time we had!! We were ripping fish out of the water one after another. The schooling bass were tearing up our Venom skip shads. We must have caught over 70 bass! That’s what happens when you take such skilled fishermen out for a day on the big O, they just catch fish. The fish catching was fun and all, but the best part for me was making friends with great people.

FROGS, FROGS, FROGS!!!

Frogs, Frogs, Frogs!! Which frog is best and when? I've been testing out different frogs over the years and have discovered some of the many intricate things to look for, as far as knowing the right time to fish a certain kind of frog. I’m going to categorize some of these frogs into groups and try to describe when to use them.
SOFT PLASTIC FROGS: (such as Venom Bully Frog, Zoom Horney Toad, Gambler Cane Toad, Reaction Innovations Trixie Shark, or Stanley Ribbit Frogs to name a few good ones) They are made of soft plastic and have little feet that kick and splash, the ones with the boot style feet make a bigger plopping splash than the ones with the smaller v shaped feet. They are great rigged on a 5/0 spring style swim bait hook. Rigged this way they are extremely weedless.

There are so many ways to fish these types of frogs, and I feel they are the easiest frogs to catch fish on. They work all year and are great for beginner bass fishermen. The best known way of fishing them is to just cast them out and reel them across the surface making there legs splash and kick on the surface like a buzz bait. Don’t forget to let them fall occasionally so that big slow bass will have time to come up and eat. Bass just love these baits. I've had 150 bass days on them with fish ranging from ½ a pound to 9.5 lbs. They work even when the fish are not biting well. Bass seem to like the v foot frogs more on calm flat water with some clarity and the boot foot frogs when there is surface disturbance and slightly stained water. If I find that the bass are not responding to the surface commotion then I will put the frog on the back of a swimming jig and swim it under the surface of the water. If it’s windy and overcast I will sometimes fish them on a chatter bait, this method has caught some real giants. If its hot and sunny and the fish won’t bite any of the swimming methods I flip and pitch the fog into thick grass with a heavy tungsten weight and a 5.0 flipping hook. In the Winter they work great as jig trailers, or on a Carolina rig down deep.

HOLLOW BODIED FROGS: (Spro, Furbit, Live Target, Ish Phat Frog, and Scum Frog are good examples)
They are primarily used as top water baits. Just throw it out and walk it on the surface or hop it along. Just like any type of bait sometimes they like it fast and sometimes they like it slow. If they like the frog slow, long pauses are key. When the water is flat and calm I’ll use a frog with a regular shaped head. If the water is a little choppy or stained I’ll go to a popping frog or a frog with a blade like the Furbit. When a fish eats it you have to give the fish a couple of seconds to get the frog in its mouth before setting the hook. These are good for targeting big bass. They don’t always get as many bites as the Soft Plastic Frogs, but when they do get eaten it’s usually a bigger fish. I like to use these when the fish are biting well on top water and when they are hiding under scum or a thin canopy of grass. They help eliminate some of the smaller fish and trigger the giants to come out and play.

EQUIPMENT: In open water or little cover use 7’2 to 7’6 ft Medium Heavy Bait Caster rigged with 20 – 40 braid. (when Carolina Rigging I use 15 lbs Berkley Big Game)
In heavy cover use a 7’2 – 7’11 heavy or extra heavy Bait Caster rod rigged with 65 lbs braid (this is the set-up for the hollow bodied frogs)

I only use Spinning equipment in open water or light cover (you will lose too many fish in heavy cover with a spinning rod) use a Medium Heavy 7’-7’6 rod with 20 - 40 braid.

Kasey, Lincoln and Logan!!

I had the pleasure of a visit from my sister Kasey and my two nephews a few days ago! Lincoln ended up catching a nice Bass all by himself! He could barely keep the rod off the gunnel when the fish was next to the boat, because she decided to go deep, but he used all the strength he had to finally subdue the giant bass! After the fish was in the boat he declared with a loud scream, that he loves fishing!! Isn't that awesome? Now we shouldn't forget about Logan because he caught some nice ones too. He got on a roll and caught fish after fish!! Kasey, now she's just a natural. The most important part was being able to spend some time with them. It's days like these that make me happy to be alive.

162 BASS IN THE GLADES!!!

My friend Andrew and I had a little friendly competition in the Glades on Wednesday March 13, and we ended up catching a total of 162 bass. Most were small, but with a little focus on the bigger fish we were able to catch several 3 pounders and two that were 5 plus.

Check those bilge pumps it could save your life and your boat.

A fellow tournament angler fishing the last tournament I fished on Okeechobee went out to fish the reef in a friends boat and ended up sinking the boat. The boat filled up with water and was flipped upside down by the waves. Fortunately, he and his partner were unharmed because they were able to use there cell phones and call for help. Of course the boat was pretty torn up. I don't know the details of what caused the boat to sink but I do know there was a pretty good chop out there and the boat he was using has a low stern. I think this accident might have been prevented by taking a couple precautionary measures. The bilge pumps should always be checked before leaving the dock. It's so easy to forget about the pumps because we have these auto pumps that kick on and off when needed. Guess what, they don't last forever, that's why the bilge area and pumps should be regularly monitored while the boat is in the water especially in rough water. Always have a spare pump available just in case, and know how to install it quickly. Also, two very important things to remember when anchoring, always anchor with the bow facing the waves, and never reverse into waves.

Okeechobee tournament win

The fishing was tough today on the big O. It only took 13.52 lbs to take the win in Carmen's tournament out of Roland s today. We didn't make allot of money but it feels good to win again. Linda Robinson my good luck charm, and I fished together.

Smiley Hsu and his Swamp Monster!

A funny thing happened yesterday, my friend Smiley and I were out in the Glades slammin bass left and right on plastic worms and jerk baits, many of them in the two to three pound range. One of the bass I brought in spit a grass hopper on the deck of my boat which put a thought in my head. How about we try and get a few bluegills for dinner since we could see giant bluegills everywhere. So I throw half of the grass hopper out on a very small hook and caught a couple of nice gills, then I cast out again and caught about an eight inch wild shiner. What a nice surprise, because big shiners equal big bass! Within 10 minutes of tossing that thing out there Smiley had the Swamp Monster of the day!! In the video you can see the tail of the shiner still moving. That big bass was the climax of our trip thanks to a coincidentally caught shiner. HA HA HA!!

UNI TO UNI OR SEAGUAR FOR FLUOROCARBON TO BRAID CONNECTIONS?

Today I spent about three hours tying knots. Some may say, what a waist of time, but I say what a productive way to spend a rainy morning. I was experimenting with tying a 15 pound test Seaguar fluorocarbon leader to 20 pound test Stren sonic braid. My usual knot for this connection is a uni to uni knot with eight wraps on each end. I put it to the test today and hooked it to a scale to see what the breaking strength was and the max I could get was 11 or 12 pounds, but most of the time the knot broke at around 9 pounds and that’s not acceptable, I needed something stronger. I researched knots online a bit and found the Seaguar knot and decided to test it out. In the Seaguar knot there are three wraps that form the loop and no wrap through the inside of the loop . When tied that way I found it to break at about 8 pounds with the 20 braid to 15 fluorocarbon connection, that surprised me because some of the guys in U tube videos giving instruction on how to tie the knot were claiming it to be close to 100% line strength. Maybe that’s true for the larger diameter lines but not for the 20 braid to 15 fluorocarbon connection. I decided to experiment with different numbers of wraps on each end of the knot and found that three through the first loop and two through the second was the magic number. The breaking strength was consistently 11 to 13 pounds I had no more breaks at 8 and 9 pounds. If I wrapped the line three or more times it was very difficult to tighten the knot down without leaving loops in the finished knot and I found that when I did get one with more wraps tied perfectly the breaking strength was less or the same. Check out some Seaguar knot tying videos online to see what I’m talking about as far as the loops and wraps. I think I’ve pretty much eliminated the Uni to Uni for my 20 braid to 15 fluorocarbon connection. I hope this was informative.

Thanks,
Thadeus

Try out new lures and techniques when catch rates are high.

Fish are biting almost everywhere in the glades! We are catching numbers of bass, most are small but lots of fun to catch. When the fish are biting so well like they are right now I enjoy trying out lures and techniques that I might want to add to my main arsenal.

Okeechobee Shiner fishing!

My clients and I met up at Roland Martins in Clewiston on Sunday. I let them know I had some apprehension of how good the fishing would be. Saturday the wind started blowing in from the north at about 20 knots ruining all the areas where I found quality fish, not to mention the drop in temperature and how that could slow the bite. My clients wanted to shiner fish so that took some of the pressure off. I figured we would at least catch 10 or 12 small fish. Well the day turned into a wonderful six hours of fish catching fun!! We fished one of the dynamite holes on the south end of the lake and caught Bass after Bass, six of which were over four pounds with the biggest weighting in at about five and a half pounds. We must have caught twenty five or more bass!! What a great day! We didn't get any of the eight pound plus giants Okeechobee is known for but who can complain about catching four and five pound fish. I want to thank Bill and Ben for fishing with me. Below is a photo of their two biggest fish.

THE FISHING IS HEATING UP!!

I'm back on the water and catching fish. Steven Burton and I fished in the Glades today and found a ton of bedding bass! The bite was slow starting out, but about two hours into our day we hit the jackpot. We found a stretch of canal loaded with beds. Unfortunately the big females haven't moved up yet, but we had a great time catching numerous fat males. They were stuffed with grass shrimp. Within the next week or so I predict the fishing to be amazing.

THE END WAS NEAR (WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT!!)

Last Sunday morning while driving north bound on US 27 I was on the way to do a Tournament out of  Belle Glade on Lake Okeechobee when an eighteen wheeler cut across in front of me. The truck darted out in front of me so quickly that I had no other option than to hit him. It's amazing how the mind becomes so aware of everything in moments like that when you are frantically trying to escape the inevitable. I keep reliving that moment before the collision over and over in my mind like a slow motion movie. After breaking briefly I must have hit him going about sixty miles per hour. I probably flipped once or twice by the look of my truck and the guard rail. By the grace of god I am not dead. I truly believe that If I weren't wearing my seat belt or If I would have hit that truck any differently that I wouldn't be here to write this. After climbing out of the driver side window I started looking for my boat and noticed the trailer next to the truck, but didn't see the boat anywhere until I glanced out towards the canal next to the road. My boat that I was towing flew about sixty yards and landed in the middle of a canal, because of combination of the morning low light and the fact that I wasn't thinking properly it looked like a mirage floating in the distance and it was as if she were beckoning me for one more day of fishing just one more day. Both my truck and boat were completely destroyed. There will not be one more day with that boat or truck.

The truck driver was walking around and he didn't seem too hurt so hopefully he was okay. I am very sore and feel as if I was the loser in an MMA fight. I don't have any major lacerations and no broken bones. Now it's just about recuperating. Hopefully, I will be back on the water soon.

Fun in the Holey Land!

Marty Arostegui and I fished the Holey Land today to try and break his 401 world record. Marty has more than double the world records than any other man. We had our chance at a big gar but he just wouldn't take Marty's fly. About midway through our trip we kind of aborted our mission of record breaking because we realized the big gar and mud fish weren't very active, and decided to help out with stocking the IGFA pond. We relocated 10 small bass one fairly large mud fish and four medium sized gar. Hopefully these fish will put a smile on a few kids faces during the fishing rodeos they have there.

Bassin In the Glades with Jack Sovoie and Don Boyle

What a trip! I have to admit it took some time to find the fish for my friends Jack and Don. With all the high water we were stumped for the first part of our day. After a location change it was game on! The magic started about an hour and a half before dark. We had blow up after blow up! They weren't giants, but it sure was fun! I hope to see Jack and Don again. They were great guys to hang out with. Above is a photo of Jack with one of his bigger Bass.

Cover of Fly Life Mag.

Some lucky guy is on the cover of Fly Life Magazine this month! http://www.flylifemagazine.com/ Check out the article on fishing in the Everglades.

Even though the fishing has slowed dramatically over the last couple of months, because of the high water, when you find the right land locked canals there are still plenty of fish waiting to be caught.

I'm headed up to Lake Okeechobee today to help Roland s' out with a guide trip. I'll give everyone the details later.

Keep catching them,
Thadeus
